WOOSTER, Ohio (Sept. 13)- The Saint Vincent football team fell on the road at Wooster by a score of 28-14 on Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats (1-1) and Fighting Scots (1-1) were tied 14-14 at the half. Wooster took advantage of two long second half passing touchdowns and shut the Bearcats out in the second half to hand Saint Vincent their first loss of 2025.
Chris Downs had another big week for the Saint Vincent offense, catching seven passes for 104 yards and caught two touchdowns. Quarterback,
Jake Phillips was 19-37 for 281 yards, throwing for two touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss for the Bearcats.
Ian Tuffs added four catches for 77 yards and
Tristan Doy totaled two catches for 54 yards as well.Â
Defensively,
Tyler Harpst led the Bearcats with ten total tackles, including five solo tackles.
Devon Dean-Coles recorded eight tackles and three pass breakups.
Jake Hostetler also recorded eight tackles, including one tackle for loss.
It was a quick start to the game for the Wooster offense. The Fighting Scots drove down on their first drive of the game and scored a touchdown to take a quick 7-0 lead.
To begin the second quarter, Saint Vincent answered as Phillips found Downs from three yards out for their first of two touchdown connections on the day.
Justin Emeigh added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.
On their ensuing offensive possession, Wooster answered with a tocuhdown to regain a 14-7 advantage.
Saint Vincent tied it up before the half. Late in the half, the Bearcats drove the ball down the field and Phillips found Downs once again for an eight yard touchdown reception. Emeigh once again added a successful extra point to tie the game at 14-14 heading into the half.
In the second half, it was all Wooster. After the majority of the third quarter went scoreless, Wooster converted on two 70-plus yard touchdown passes within four minutes of game time from each other.
SVC turned the ball over on downs in their final two possessions of the half.
The Bearcats were limited to just 43 rushing yards over the course of the game. Wooster out gained SVC by a 385-294 margin.
Saint Vincent will look to get back on track as they open up Presidents Athletic Conference play next Saturday, September 20 at Geneva. Opening kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Beaver Falls next Saturday night.
