Men's soccer falls to Muskingum in tight non-conference matchup

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 3)- The Saint Vincent men's soccer team fell in a tight 2-1 contest to Muskingum under the lights at UPMC Field on Wednesday night.

The Bearcats (2-1) scored less than one minute into the game and held a 1-0 lead at the half. However, Muskingum (2-1) answered with a goal one minute into the second half and another one about nine minutes later, before holding the Bearcats scoreless the rest of the way.

Saint Vincent out shot the Muskies 19-9, including 7-3 in shots on goal over the course of the contest. Antonio Mendes netted the Bearcats lone goal and Bruno Hurtado assisted on the goal.

SVC quickly pushed into their offensive end to begin the game as Mendes took advantage of some Muskingum confusion and found the back of the net on a pass from Hurtado to quickly give SVC a 1-0 lead. The rest of the half featured some back-and-forth play with SVC having the bulk of the scoring opportunities as they out shot the Muskies 9-2 in the half.

After trailing 1-0 at the half, Muskingum came out with a lot of momentum and intensity as they tied the game just under one minute into the half. That momentum continued on the Muskingum offensive end as they scored another goal nine minutes later and SVC found themselves trailing 2-1.

Saint Vincent recorded multiple scoring opportunities including one late in the second half, but the Muskingum defense held strong to hand the Bearcats their first loss of the season.

Kameron Rock made one save in net for the Bearcats in the loss. Corner kicks were 5-2 in favor of SVC and fouls were 20-8 with the Muskies totaling 20, including 11 in the second half.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Friday, September 5 as they play host to Penn State-Beaver in a non-conference matchup. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night at UPMC Field.
