Maddock's late goal lifts men's soccer past Hiram, 2-1, on senior day

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 17) – Daniel Maddock scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to lift the Saint Vincent College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Hiram College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Senior Day at UPMC Field.

With the win, Saint Vincent improved to 8-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in PAC play, earning its second consecutive conference victory. Hiram fell to 5-4-5 overall and 3-4-2 in conference action.

Cameron Mulvanny and Maddock each scored for the Bearcats, while Bruno Hurtado and Ian Varga recorded assists. Grant Archuleta made four saves in goal to earn the victory for Saint Vincent.

The Bearcats opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Mulvanny found the back of the net off an assist from Hurtado, giving Saint Vincent an early 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Mulvanny's sixth of the season.

Hiram looked to respond throughout the remainder of the opening half, but Archuleta turned away three shots to preserve the Bearcats' one-goal lead heading into halftime.

Saint Vincent continued to hold its advantage throughout much of the second half, before the Terriers evened the score in the 77th minute. Carmine Boscarello converted a penalty kick at the 76:15 mark, tying the contest at 1-1 with just under 14 minutes remaining.

The Bearcats wasted little time responding, however, as Maddock scored just 61 seconds later, finding the back of the net off an assist from Varga at the 77:16 mark to put Saint Vincent back in front, 2-1.

Maddock's goal, his seventh of the season, proved to be the game-winner as the Bearcats held off Hiram over the final 12-plus minutes to secure the important conference victory.

Hiram held a 12-9 advantage in total shots, while both teams recorded five shots on goal. Saint Vincent held a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Maddock led the Bearcats offensively with six shots, including four on goal, while Mulvanny added three shots and one goal.

Archuleta played all 90 minutes in net for Saint Vincent, recording four saves while allowing just the one penalty kick goal. Hiram goalkeeper Derek Ufholz finished with three saves in the loss.

Prior to the game, the Bearcats honored their 11 seniors with a special senior day ceremony.

Saint Vincent returns to aciton on Tuesday, October 20 with a road PAC matchup at Chatham. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
