Bearcats battle Chatham to 1-1 draw in PAC road matchup

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Oct. 20) – Cameron Mulvanny scored his seventh goal of the season as the Saint Vincent College men's soccer team battled Chatham University to a 1-1 draw in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Tuesday evening at UPMC Graham Field.

With the tie, the Bearcats moved to 8-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in PAC play, while Chatham moved to 3-9-3 overall and 3-5-2 in conference action.

Mulvanny scored the lone goal for Saint Vincent, while goalkeeper Grant Archuleta made four saves in net to help the Bearcats secure the conference draw.

Chatham opened the scoring less than five minutes into the contest, when Justin Knox found the back of the net off an assist from Ben Mackin at the 4:51 mark, giving the Cougars an early 1-0 advantage.

The Bearcats looked to respond throughout the remainder of the opening half, generating their first shot on goal in the 30th minute when Mulvanny fired an attempt that was turned away by Chatham goalkeeper Maxwell Cottrill.

Just over six minutes later, Mulvanny broke through for Saint Vincent, scoring his seventh goal of the season at the 35:46 mark to even the score at 1-1.

The two teams remained deadlocked heading into halftime, with Chatham holding a slight 5-4 advantage in total shots over the opening 45 minutes.

Chatham controlled much of the offensive action to begin the second half, recording several scoring opportunities as the Cougars looked to regain the lead.

Archuleta came up with several key saves for Saint Vincent, turning away attempts from Caleb Manse in the 62nd minute, Mackin in the 64th minute and Manse again in the 66th minute. He added another save on an attempt from John Iratagotia in the 68th minute, keeping the contest tied at 1-1.

After withstanding Chatham's offensive pressure, the Bearcats generated a late surge of their own, recording six shots on goal over the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Daniel Maddock led the late offensive attack for Saint Vincent, recording five shots on goal in the final 10 minutes, while Stephen Scott added another scoring opportunity in the 83rd minute.

However, Cottrill turned away all six attempts, including Maddock's final shot with just 11 seconds remaining, preserving the 1-1 draw.

Chatham held a 15-10 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, but Saint Vincent recorded eight shots on goal compared to five for the Cougars.

Maddock led the Bearcats offensively with five shots, all five on goal, while Mulvanny added two shots, both on goal, including his first-half equalizer. Scott recorded one shot on goal, while Bruno Hurtado and Javier Torres each added one shot.

Archuleta played all 90 minutes in goal for Saint Vincent, making four saves while allowing just one goal. Cottrill finished with seven saves for Chatham.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, October 24, when they host Allegheny College in another important PAC matchup. The contest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at UPMC Field in Latrobe.
