Bearcats play to 1-1 draw in season finale at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 28) – Ian Varga scored the equalizing goal in the 86th minute as the Saint Vincent College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Thiel College in its regular season finale on Wednesday evening.

The Bearcats (7-5-3, 5-4-3 PAC) controlled much of the contest offensively, outshooting the Tomcats (4-10-4, 1-7-3 PAC) by a 22-10 margin, including a 14-6 advantage in the second half, but needed a late goal to come away with the tie.

Thiel opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Mitchell Strauss converted a penalty kick to give the Tomcats an early 1-0 advantage.

Saint Vincent responded with offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the opening half, recording eight shots and five corner kicks, but was unable to find the equalizer as Thiel carried its one-goal lead into halftime.

The Bearcats continued to apply pressure in the second half, firing 14 shots and earning eight corner kicks over the final 45 minutes.

Saint Vincent's persistence finally paid off in the 86th minute when Varga found the back of the net off an assist from John Garcia, tying the contest at 1-1 with just four minutes remaining. The goal marked Varga's first of the season.

Neither team was able to break the deadlock over the final four minutes, as the two teams settled for the 1-1 draw.

Saint Vincent held a commanding 22-10 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. The Bearcats also held a 13-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Daniel Maddock and Cameron Mulvanny led the Saint Vincent offense with four shots apiece, including two shots on goal each. Jack Billick added three shots, while Varga and Garcia recorded two shots apiece.

In goal, Grant Archuleta started for the Bearcats before Andrew Schneider entered in the first half. Schneider played the final 64 minutes, making three saves without allowing a goal.

Thiel goalkeeper Dylan Budziak finished with nine saves, while Strauss led the Tomcats with four shots, including three on goal.

With the draw, the Bearcats conclude their 2026 season with an overall record of 7-5-3 and a 5-4-3 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Saint Vincent fell just short of qualifying for the PAC Tournament, bringing its season to a close.
