NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 5) - The Saint Vincent men's tennis team picked up a 6-1 victory over Westminster in a road match in New Wilmington.
Saint Vincent won seven of the nine matches contested against the Titans, taking two of three doubles matches before winning five of six in singles play.
In doubles play, Blaise Bukovac and Braden Yokopenic opened the match with a 6-2 victory over William Nebiolo and Hayden Kenny in the top doubles position.
Westminster evened doubles play with a 6-4 win over William Hinkson IV and Timothy Jakubek in the number three spot, before Brady Johnson and John Allen clinched the doubles point for the Bearcats. Johnson and Allen battled to a 7-6 (7-5) victory over Aydan Gross and Sean Stukus in number two doubles to give Saint Vincent a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Yokopenic opened singles play with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory over Nebiolo in the number two position. Bukovac followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Gross in the top singles spot, pushing the Saint Vincent lead to 3-0.
Hinkson IV clinched the match for the Bearcats with a three-set victory in number five singles. After dropping the opening set, 6-3, Hinkson IV responded with a 6-2 win in the second before defeating Michael Howard, 10-8, in the deciding tiebreaker.
Johnson added another point for Saint Vincent in the number four position, defeating Kenny 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Daniel Lee also rallied from a one-set deficit in number six singles. After falling 6-2 in the opening set against Hayne Webster, Lee answered with a 6-4 second-set victory before winning the deciding tiebreaker, 10-8.
Westminster's lone point of the match came in number three singles, where Stukus edged Allen in a tightly contested three-set match. Allen rebounded from a 6-4 opening-set loss to win the second set, 6-4, before Stukus prevailed 13-11 in the deciding tiebreaker.
The Bearcats return home on Wednesday, Oct. 7, hosting Geneva at 4 p.m.
