CRESSON, Pa. (Mar. 14) — The Saint Vincent College women's lacrosse team earned a 14-9 non-conference road victory over Mount Aloysius on Saturday afternoon in Cresson.
The Bearcats improved to 4-1 on the season after using a strong fourth quarter to break a 9-9 tie and close out the win.
Saint Vincent and Mount Aloysius were tied 3-3 after the opening quarter, but the Bearcats edged in front with a 5-3 second period to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.
The Mounties answered in the third, trimming the deficit to 9-8, then tied the game at 9-9 early in the fourth before Saint Vincent scored the final five goals of the afternoon to secure the victory.
The Bearcats were led offensively by
MaryKatherine New and
Chloe Herring, who each scored four goals. New finished with four goals on eight shots, including six shots on goal, while also adding three draw controls and going 2-for-3 on free-position attempts.
Herring posted four goals and one assist for five points, putting five of her six shots on goal, while adding a team-high 10 ground balls, one caused turnover, one draw control, and a perfect 2-for-2 mark on free-position shots.
Melanie Seefeldt added three goals and one assist, finishing with four points on three shots on goal, while
Carolina Walters contributed two goals on three shots.
Cara Dupilka rounded out the scoring with one goal, adding two draw controls, one ground ball, and one caused turnover.
Saint Vincent also received key support in the midfield from
Katie Smith, who recorded one assist, three ground balls, and a team-high seven draw controls.
Louisa Zamborsky added two ground balls and one caused turnover, while
Ava Baeslach chipped in two caused turnovers and
Valerie Clabaugh finished with one ground ball and one caused turnover.
In goal,
Cassidy Rega played all 60 minutes and made three saves while allowing nine goals. Mount Aloysius goalkeeper Keira Murray finished with six saves. Saint Vincent outshot the Mounties 27-14 and held a 20-12 edge in shots on goal.
The Bearcats also totaled 18 ground balls, 13 draw controls, and went 11-for-15 on clears while forcing 22 Mount Aloysius turnovers. Saint Vincent converted 5 of 6 free-position chances in the win.
After Mount Aloysius tied the game on Shelby Smeal's goal with 13:19 left in the fourth, the Bearcats responded with goals from New, Herring, New again, Seefeldt, and Herring over the remainder of the period to put the game away.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday, March 19 with their PAC opener at Thiel. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Greenville on Thursday night.
