LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. (Mar. 15) — The Saint Vincent softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Penn State-Fayette on Sunday afternoon.
The Bearcats outscored the Lions by a 28-1 margin over the course of the doubleheader, winning the opener 13-1 and the finale 15-0 in a run-rule shortened contest.
Game 1- Saint Vincent 13, Penn State-Fayette 1
The Saint Vincent College softball team used a late offensive explosion to pull away from Penn State Fayette on Sunday afternoon, scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure a 13-1 non-conference victory.
Saint Vincent got on the board in the top of the first inning when
Mackenzie Favero scored on an RBI groundout by
Emily Dudenhoeffer, giving the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats added another run in the second, as Favero delivered an RBI single to left field that brought home
Alyssa Henderson and made it 2-0.
After a scoreless third inning, the Bearcats pushed their advantage to 5-0 in the fourth.
Mya McHugh was hit by a pitch and later stole second, while
Lily Rush was also hit by a pitch and
Anita Szymoniak drew a walk to load the bases.
Favero then came through with a two-run single to right, scoring Rush and McHugh, before
Macie McHugh added an RBI groundout to plate Szymoniak.
Penn State Fayette broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Haylee Speicher singled and later scored on a Julie Cooper RBI triple to right field, trimming the Saint Vincent lead to 5-1.
The Bearcats threatened in the fifth and sixth innings but did not add to their lead until a massive seventh inning put the game out of reach.
Abby Bauer opened the frame with a single,
Samantha Farrell was hit by a pitch, and
Eva Farone drew a walk to load the bases. Szymoniak started the scoring surge with a two-run double to center.
Taylor Williams followed with a two-run double of her own, Dudenhoeffer added an RBI single,
Josey Michalski drove in another run with a double,
Dakota Hershberger lifted a sacrifice fly, and
Remmie Seitz capped the outburst with an RBI single to center as Saint Vincent scored eight runs on eight hits in the inning.
Favero led the Bearcats offensively, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, while Szymoniak scored twice and drove in two. Williams went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Michalski finished with two hits and an RBI, and Bauer added two hits and scored once.
Dudenhoeffer also drove in two runs, while Seitz contributed an RBI single off the bench. As a team, Saint Vincent totaled 17 hits and 13 RBIs in the win.
Inside the circle,
A.J. Arnal earned the win after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five.
Mya McHugh worked the seventh inning and gave up two hits while striking out two. Penn State Fayette finished with six hits in the game, led by Speicher's two-hit effort.
With the victory, Saint Vincent improved to 3-6 on the season, while Penn State Fayette fell to 0-1.
Game 2- Saint Vincent 15, Penn State-Fayette 0 (5 Innings)
he Saint Vincent softball team completed a dominant doubleheader sweep of Penn State Fayette on Saturday afternoon, powering its way to a 15-0 victory in five innings in the nightcap.
Saint Vincent scored in four of its five trips to the plate, finished with 18 hits, and backed the offense with a shutout effort in the circle from
Natalie Bizup.
The Bearcats wasted little time taking control, erupting for five runs in the top of the first inning.
Mackenzie Favero opened the game with a bunt single, moved around the bases on a passed ball and wild pitch, and scored the game's first run.
Later in the frame,
Josey Michalski launched a two-run homer to right to plate
Eva Farone, while
Samantha Farrell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run.
Taylor Williams then added an RBI groundout, giving Saint Vincent an early 5-0 advantage.
After being held off the board in the second despite an
Emily Dudenhoeffer triple, Saint Vincent broke the game open even further with a four-run third.
Dakota Hershberger walked and
Abby Bauer singled to set the table before Farrell delivered an RBI single.
Dudenhoeffer followed with a two-run single to left, and
Alyssa Henderson added an RBI single to right as the Bearcats stretched the lead to 9-0.
Saint Vincent added two more runs in the fourth inning. Williams doubled to left and later scored on an RBI double by Farone, who came around a batter later when
Haley Hamilton singled home Favero after entering as a pinch hitter. That pushed the Bearcat lead to 11-0.
The Bearcats capped the scoring with a four-run fifth.
Remmie Seitz singled to open the inning,
A.J. Arnal followed with a single, and
Natalie Bizup added a pinch-hit single to load the bases. Williams drove in Seitz with an RBI single before Farone cleared the bases with a three-run double to left, extending the margin to the final 15-0 score.
Farone led the offense by going 2-for-5 with two doubles, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Williams finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Dudenhoeffer went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.
Inside the circle, Bizup tossed all 5.0 innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out three.
Penn State Fayette put runners on in multiple innings, including a pair in the fourth and two more in the fifth, but Saint Vincent kept the Roaring Lions off the board and turned a double play to help preserve the shutout.
With the victory, Saint Vincent improved to 4-6 on the season, while Penn State Fayette fell to 0-2.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday, March 19 with a home doubleheader against La Roche. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
