LATROBE, Pa. (Mar. 31) – The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team suffered a tough 9-8 Presidents' Athletic Conference loss to Allegheny College Tuesday evening at UPMC Field, with the Gators scoring the game-winner with 32 seconds remaining.
Allegheny took a 3-2 lead after the opening quarter before extending its advantage to 4-3 at halftime. The Gators added three goals in the third, but the Bearcats stayed within striking distance behind a pair of scores from
Chloe Herring and entered the fourth trailing 7-5.
Saint Vincent mounted its comeback in the final quarter.
Melanie Seefeldt scored off an assist from
Cara Dupilka to make it 7-6, and
MaryKatherine New followed with a man-up goal off a feed from Seefeldt to tie the game at 7-7.
After Allegheny regained the lead with 3:32 left, Dupilka answered with an unassisted goal at the 1:31 mark to even the score at 8-8.
The Gators, however, found the deciding goal with just 32 seconds remaining, as Caroline Smith scored off an assist from Olivia Savage to lift Allegheny to the 9-8 win.
Herring led Saint Vincent with three goals, while Dupilka recorded one goal and three assists. Seefeldt posted one goal and two assists,
Carolina Walters Walters added two goals, and New finished with one goal and one assist.
New controlled a team-best five draws, while Smith anchored the defense with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Herring added five ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Rega made nine saves in a complete-game effort in goal. As a team, Saint Vincent outshot Allegheny 25-23, held a 30-24 edge in ground balls, and converted 20 of 26 clear attempts.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday, April 2 with a road matchup at Bethany. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Bethany.
