LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 13) — The Saint Vincent College men's tennis team earned a 4-3 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over Washington & Jefferson College Monday afternoon at the SVC Courts.
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in PAC play, while the Presidents fell to 5-10 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
Saint Vincent claimed the doubles point by taking two of the three flights.
At No. 1 doubles,
Braden Yokopenic and
Blaise Bukovac defeated Nate Clarke and Alex Duing, 6-4, while
Julien Vonovier and
Kyle Murray added a 6-4 win over Jackson Akers and Colby Peters at No. 3.
Washington & Jefferson's lone doubles victory came at No. 2, where Jacob Bennett and Nick Bussard topped
Brady Johnson and
Matthew Sadusky, 6-1.
In singles play, Yokopenic gave the Bearcats a point with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Bennett at No. 1, and Sadusky followed with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory against Duing at No. 3. Johnson also earned a comeback win at No. 5 singles, bouncing back for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision over Peters.
Washington & Jefferson picked up its three singles points at Nos. 2, 4 and 6. Akers defeated Bukovac, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2, Clarke earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over
J.T. Gockel at No. 4, and Bussard was awarded the No. 6 singles point by opponent retirement after Murray won the opening set, 6-4, before Bussard took the second set, 6-3.
Saint Vincent returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14 with a home PAC matchup against Grove City. The match is scheduled to begin at p.m. at the SVC Courts.
