WLATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 21) – The Saint Vincent College men's tennis team saw its season come to an end Tuesday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to No. 5 Washington & Jefferson College in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Quarterfinals at the SVC Courts.
The Bearcats closed the year with a 14-6 overall record, while the Presidents improved to 6-11.
Saint Vincent grabbed the early doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Braden Yokopenic and
Blaise Bukovac earned a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3) victory in the top flight, while
Brady Johnson and
Matthew Sadusky picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2.
With Sadusky's win, he tied the program record for career victories.
Washington & Jefferson answered earned a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Bearcats still carried a 1-0 lead into singles play. W&J opened singles play with three consecutive victories at number five, number two, and number three to take a 3-1 lead.
The Bearcats cut into the lead when Johnson battled back for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, cutting the overall score to 3-2. Yokopenic tied the match with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles as the score was 3-3.
The match then came down to No. 6 singles, where Nick Bussard outlasted
Kyle Murray in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), to clinch the 4-3 victory for Washington & Jefferson.
Saint Vincent finished the match with doubles wins from Yokopenic and Bukovac and from Johnson and Sadusky, along with singles victories by Yokopenic and Johnson. The tightly contested quarterfinal featured three tiebreak sets and came down to the final court before being decided.
