NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Apr. 30) – The Saint Vincent College softball team fell to third-seeded Bethany College, 4-2, in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Westminster College.
The Bearcats struck first in the top of the first inning. Eva Farone led off the game with a triple to right center and came home on an RBI groundout by Alyssa Henderson, giving Saint Vincent a 1-0 lead.
Bethany answered in the bottom of the second, as Trinity Edge hit a grand slam to left field to put the Bison in front, 4-1. Saint Vincent cut into the deficit in the third inning. Farone drew a walk and later scored on an RBI single to right field by Josey Michalski, trimming Bethany's lead to 4-2.
The Bearcats continued to battle, but were held scoreless over the final four innings, as Bethany held on for the 4-2 win. Farone led Saint Vincent offensively, going 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and two runs scored. Michalski went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk, while Abby Bauer and Mackenzie Favero each added hits. Henderson drove in Saint Vincent's first run.
A.J. Arnal started in the circle and took the loss, allowing four runs over two innings. Mya McHugh was strong in relief, throwing four scoreless innings while scattering five hits.
Saint Vincent will continue PAC Tournament play tomorrow, Friday, May 1 with an elimination game matchup against fourth seeded Hiram. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Westminster College.
