Softball sweeps PAC doubleheader at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Apr. 8)- The Saint Vincent softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Thiel on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Bearcats won the opener 10-0 in a five inning run-rule shortened victory before earning an 11-6 victory in the finale of the doubleheader to secure the sweep.
 
Game 1- Saint Vincent 10, Thiel 0 (5 Innings)
The Saint Vincent softball team earned a 10-0 five-inning victory over Thiel College in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Tomcat Park.
 
Saint Vincent (10-13, 4-7 PAC) scored three times in the opening inning and never looked back. Eva Farone came home on a wild pitch for the game's first run, Josey Michalski followed with an RBI groundout, and Samantha Farrell added another RBI groundout to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead.
 
The Bearcats added two more runs in the second inning. With Mackenzie Favero and Shayna Perigo aboard, Emily Dudenhoeffer lined a two-run single down the right field line to extend the Saint Vincent advantage to 5-0.
 
Saint Vincent kept the pressure on in the third. Michalski opened the inning with a solo home run to left field, Farone later singled home Taylor Williams, and Anita Szymoniak scored on a fielder's choice to make it an 8-0 game.
 
The Bearcats pushed across one run in each of the final two innings, with Lily Rush scoring on a Michalski groundout in the fourth before Natalie Bizup delivered an RBI single to right in the fifth to cap the scoring at 10-0.
 
Farone paced the Saint Vincent offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Dudenhoeffer finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Michalski also drove in two runs, including her solo homer, and Favero scored twice as part of the Bearcats' 11-hit effort.
 
In the circle, A.J. Arnal earned the win to improve to 5-5, while Saint Vincent limited Thiel to just three hits in the shutout. The Bearcats also turned to Mya McHugh in the circle during the victory.
 
Game 2- Saint Vincent 11, Thiel 6
The Saint Vincent softball team completed a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Thiel College with an 11-6 victory Wednesday afternoon at Tomcat Park.
 
Saint Vincent (11-13, 5-7 PAC) came out swinging, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Alyssa Henderson got the Bearcats on the board with an RBI single to center, Josey Michalski followed with a two-run double to left center and Taylor Williams added an RBI single to make it 4-0 after one.
 
The Bearcats added two more runs in the second. Eva Farone tripled to right center and later scored on a Mackenzie Favero RBI single, before Michalski lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Favero and push the advantage to 6-0.
 
After a scoreless third, Saint Vincent extended its lead in the fourth. Samantha Farrell singled down the left field line and Abby Bauer followed with a two-run single to left center, scoring both Farrell and Michalski for an 8-0 lead.
 
Thiel got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bearcats answered again in the sixth when Williams singled to center to score Farrell and make it 9-1. The Tomcats rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to trim the deficit to 9-6, aided by a pair of Saint Vincent errors.
 
Saint Vincent put the game away in the seventh. Favero and Farone both scored on a two-run double down the left field line by Michalski, giving the Bearcats their final 11-6 margin.
 
Favero led the way offensively, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Michalski finished 2-for-4 with a game-high five RBIs, including two doubles and a sacrifice fly. Bauer went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks, while Farone and Farrell each scored twice as part of Saint Vincent's 18-hit effort.
 
In the circle, Natalie Bizup earned the win to improve to 5-4 after tossing six innings and allowing six runs, three earned, on 11 hits. A.J. Arnal worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief, striking out one.
 
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, April 11 with a road PAC doubleheader at Franciscan. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Steubenville on Saturday.
