LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 9)- The Saint Vincent men's soccer team picked up its second consecutive victory, shutting out Penn State Altoona, 3-0, in its home opener on Wednesday evening at UPMC Field.
Saint Vincent (2-1) scored twice in the opening half before adding another goal in the second half to secure the victory over the Lions. Oziel Bonola-Soriano led the Bearcats offensively, scoring twice in the victory, while Stephen Scott scored his first goal of the season and added an assist. Andrew Levush and Cameron Mulvanny each recorded assists as well.
Grant Archuleta picked up his second consecutive win in net for the Bearcats, making two saves to record his first shutout of the season. Saint Vincent opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Levush found Bonola-Soriano, who scored to give the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats continued to control the pace throughout the opening half. In the 36th minute, Bonola-Soriano found the back of the net for the second time, scoring off an assist from Scott to increase the Saint Vincent lead to 2-0 heading into halftime. Saint Vincent added to its lead in the 60th minute. Mulvanny set up Scott, who scored his first goal of the season to give the Bearcats a 3-0 advantage.
The Saint Vincent defense held the Lions scoreless over the remainder of the match to secure the shutout victory. The Bearcats controlled the offensive attack throughout the evening, outshooting Penn State Altoona by a 21-7 margin, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Seamus Ballesteros led Saint Vincent with five shots, including three on goal, while Daniel Maddock and Javier Torres each recorded three shots.
Penn State Altoona held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Archuleta stopped both shots he faced, while Lions goalkeeper Tyler Tardiff made seven saves.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, September 12 when the Bearcats host Penn College at UPMC Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night in Latrobe.
