LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 13)- The Saint Vincent women's soccer team picked up its third consecutive victory, defeating Penn College, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at UPMC Field. Sunday's game was a make-up from yesterday's scheduled game that was postponed due to severe storms in the Latrobe area.
The Bearcats (3-1) scored twice in the second half to break a 1-1 halftime tie and secure the non-conference victory over the Wildcats (3-1). Emma Koller led the Saint Vincent offensive attack, scoring two goals, while Addie Fisher scored one goal. Riley Kerr and Cori Bieber each added an assist in the win.
Saint Vincent opened the scoring in the 16th minute. After a Penn College foul in the box, Koller converted the ensuing penalty kick to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats held the lead for the majority of the opening half before Penn College found the equalizer late in the half. In the 44th minute, Holly Herbert scored off an assist from Avery Puderbach to tie the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Saint Vincent came out strong offensively in the second half, recording several early scoring opportunities before regaining the lead in the 61st minute. Bieber found Fisher, who scored her second goal of the season to put the Bearcats back in front, 2-1.
The Bearcats continued to control the offensive attack throughout the second half. Saint Vincent recorded 13 shots over the final 45 minutes while limiting Penn College to just four. In the 86th minute, Koller put the game away with her second goal of the afternoon. Kerr set up Koller, who found the back of the net to increase the Saint Vincent lead to 3-1.
The Saint Vincent defense held the Wildcats scoreless over the remainder of the match to secure the Bearcats' third consecutive victory. Saint Vincent outshot Penn College 19-7 over the course of the game, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Bearcats also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Koller and Fisher led the Bearcats with three shots apiece, with all three of each player's attempts going on goal. Bella Meder also recorded three shots, while Elizzabeth Wilson and Kerr each totaled two. Rilyn Warner earned the win in net for Saint Vincent, playing all 90 minutes and making three saves. Penn College goalkeeper Harley Oliphant made nine saves in the loss.
The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday, September 16 when they travel to Loretto, Pennsylvania to take on Saint Francis University. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
