GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 1)- Despite a strong second half, the Saint Vincent women's soccer team dropped their season opener at Pitt-Greensburg by a score of 2-1 on a hot Tuesday afternoon in Greensburg.
The Bearcats (0-1) outshot the Bobcats (1-0) 15-1 in the second half, but were unable to overcome two early first half goals.
Bella Meder scored the lone goal for the Bearcats in the loss, while
Emma Koller picked up the assist on the goal.
UPG controlled the opening 25 minutes of play. In the 12th minute, Bella Carotto broke the scoreless tie on an assist from Riley Gesinski to give UPG a 1-0 lead. After the goal, Greensburg kept the ball in their offensive end and scored their second goal, which turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 24th minute. Gesinski scored the unassisted goal for the Bobcats.
Saint Vincent immediately answered just over a minute later as Meder scored the lone goal on a pass from Koller to cut the UPG lead in half. In the final seconds of the first half, the Bearcats hit the crossbar, which would have tied the game. Shots were 7-7 in the first half, but SVC held a slight 5-4 afvantage in shots on goal.
It was all Bearcats in the second half. Saint Vincent totaled eight shots on goal and limited Pitt-Greensburg to zero shots on goal in the entirety of the second half. Despite holding the ball in their offensive end for the entirety of the second half, the Pitt-Greensburg defense held strong and shut the Bearcats out in the half to hand SVC the season opening loss.
Rilyn Warner took the loss in net for SVC, making two saves, while allowing the two Bobcat goals. Pitt-Greensburg goalie Kira Howcroft picked up the win in net, making an impressive 12 saves.
Saint Vincent outshot UPG 22-8 (13-4 SOG) over the course of the game. Corner kicks were 9-3 in favor of the Bearcats, six of which came in the second half.Â
The Bearcats will look to rebound in their next matchup on Saturday, September 5, as they take Muskingum at UPMC Field in the home opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.
