LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 26) – The Saint Vincent men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Saturday evening at UPMC Field.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Bearcats (4-3, 1-2 PAC) struck first early in the second half. Daniel Maddock converted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to give Saint Vincent a 1-0 lead.
The Presidents (3-4, 2-1 PAC) answered just over eight minutes later, as Logen Mackey converted a penalty kick of his own in the 61st minute to even the score at 1-1.
W&J then scored the eventual game-winner in the 71st minute. Jacek Piekut found Ryan Noel, who scored to give the Presidents a 2-1 advantage. Saint Vincent finished the evening with 12 shots, including five on goal, while W&J totaled 18 shots with nine on target. The Bearcats held a 9-7 advantage in corner kicks.
Maddock led the Saint Vincent attack with four shots, including two on goal and his second goal of the season. Cameron Mulvanny added three shots, while Seamus Ballesteros recorded two. Jack Billick and Ballesteros each placed one shot on goal.
Grant Archuleta played all 90 minutes in net for the Bearcats, making seven saves in the loss.
Saint Vincent will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30, when the Bearcats continue PAC play against Franciscan. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Steubenville.
