HOUGHTON, N.Y. (Sept. 4) – The Saint Vincent men's soccer team scored four second-half goals to pull away for a 5-1 victory over Houghton on Friday evening.
After playing to a 1-1 tie at the half, Saint Vincent (1-1) scored four unanswered goals over the final 45 minutes to secure its first victory of the season.
Five different Bearcats found the back of the net in the win, as Jack Billick, Cameron Mulvanny, Oziel Bonola-Soriano, Javier Torres and Nick Johnson all scored for SVC. Mulvanny also added an assist, while Ian Varga, John Garcia and Cameron Mulvanny each recorded assists.
Grant Archuleta picked up the win in net, making three saves while allowing just one goal. Houghton opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Ethan Cruz found the back of the net to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Saint Vincent responded less than two minutes later, as Billick scored his first goal of the season off of an assist from Mulvanny to tie the match at 1-1.
The Bearcats wasted little time taking control in the second half. Mulvanny scored in the 52nd minute to give Saint Vincent its first lead of the evening at 2-1. That lead remained until the 75th minute when Bonola-Soriano scored to increase the SVC advantage to 3-1. Just over a minute later, Torres scored off of an assist from Garcia to make it 4-1.
Johnson capped off the scoring in the 81st minute, finding the back of the net off of an assist from Varga to give Saint Vincent the 5-1 victory. Saint Vincent outshot Houghton by a 14-11 margin, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Highlanders held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday, September 9 as they host Penn State-Altoona in their home opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at UPMC Field on Wednesday night.
