Joe Phillips

Joe Phillips joined the staff in January of 2019 under coach Aaron Smetanka.

He started his coaching career at Slippery Rock University, where in 2017 he coached the team's defensive line that featured All-American Marcus Martin, who had one of the most historic seasons by a defensive lineman in Division II history.   The senior end was named the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year for a third consecutive season, the Conference Commissioner's Association Defensive Player of the Year as well as the Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year.  Additionally, Martin the first Division II player to ever be named one of the five finalists for the Ted Hendricks Award as the best defensive end in all of college football.   Coach Phillips was also responsible for the mentoring of a defensive line unit that featured nine underclassmen. SRU’s defensive line accounted for 22.5 of the team’s 27 sacks and 54 of its 88 tackles for loss.

In 2018 at SRU, Phillips coached First-Team All-Conference and Third-Team All-Region redshirt freshman Jeff Marx. The defense was top-20 in the country in both run defense (16th) and tackles for loss (12th). Slippery Rock won the PSAC West Division Title and made it to the Super Region 1 Championship Game. Phillips also assisted with the Strength and Conditioning program at Slippery Rock after obtaining his USAW and NSCA-CSCS certifications.
 
Phillips, who earned a bachelor's degree in public health from SRU in 2017, was a two-time first team All-PSAC selection and was named to the second team as a sophomore after transferring in from the Citadel after his freshman year.  He was a first team all-region selection and a second team preseason All-American selection as a junior in 2015 and second team all-region selection as a senior in 2016, Phillips finished his three-year Rock career with 86 total tackles, including 29.0 tackles for loss and 15.0 sacks. During his time he also won back-to-back PSAC Western Division and PSAC Overall Conference titles in 2014 and 2015. Was Team Captain his senior year in 2016. He also recorded three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, one of which was returned for a touchdown. 
 
A native of Washington, Pennsylvania, Phillips works with the defensive line at Saint Vincent.
