Dr. Thomas Cline has served as head golf coach for the Saint Vincent College Bearcats since 2004. Cline also currently serves as the chair of the golf coaches in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Over the past decade, Cline has built a men's golf program that is a perennial contender for the conference championship.Â
In 2013-14, the men’s golf team won the Presidents' Athletic Conference and earned a berth to the NCAA Division III National Championships, their second in two years. Senior Captain Tim Barto was the first Bearcat to qualify for the finals at Nationals with a 72-71, 1-under par, in Greensboro, N.C. Following the season, Dr. Cline was named PAC Coach of the Year.Â
Under Cline's tutelage the Bearcats have put together a history of strong performers.Â
Most recently, Jake Reed was named PAC MVP during the 2015-16 season. Micah Markantone was lauded with PAC MVP honors in 2014-15 and also won the individual PAC title in 2012-13. Samuel Cline took home PAC MVP honors in 2011-12.
Since 2005, a plethora of Bearcats have won individual tournament championships, including Christopher Zamias (at Allegheny and Grove City) Jason Jones (at UPG), Devin Gmitter (at W&J), Doug Mehall (at PAC and Westminster), Steve Fiori (at Grove City and SVC), Samuel Cline (at PAC), Micah Markantone (at PAC), and Derek Lingafelt (at SVC and PAC).
During the 2014-15 season the following individual titles were claimed: Micah Markantone (PAC), Jake Reed (Thiel), Cam Roth/Jake Reed (SVC Doug Rogers Memorial) and Jake Reed (Allegheny Kuhn Fall Invitational).
In 2015-16 the following individual titles were claimed, Jake Reed (PAC, Westminster Invitational and the SVC Doug Rogers Memorial) and Ben Biss (Edward Jones Shootout).
During the 2016-17 season, Nate Yackovich (Westminster Spring Invite), Ben Biss (Doug Rogers Memorial, Grove City Spring Invitational and the Grove City Fall Invitational. In 2017-18, Nate Yackovich tied for third at the annual PAC Championships to earn First Team All-PAC honors. Jimmy Dolan picked up second team honors.
As coach of the women's team, Cline and assistant coach Mallery have built a golf program that is a contender for the conference championship, eventually breaking through for their first title during the 2017-18 season.
Coach Mallery, the program's first team captain during her playing years, won an individual championship (at UPG), along with several runner-up finishes during her tenure as captain. Former Bearcat Jamie Lute also captured individual titles (at Westminster and SVC), as did Laura McDermott, Taylor Bianco, and Natalie Caratelli.
In 2013, Senior Sarah Rebitch set a conference record with a 77 at the Fall Championship, where she earned second overall. Since 2010, Bearcat women have won multiple individual titles, including Jayna Cline (at Thiel), Sarah Rebitch (at Thiel and PAC). During the 2015-16 season, Samm Firestone won the Thiel College Spring Invitational.
In 2016-17, the Bearcats claimed five individual titles. Firestone racked up individual championships during both the SVC Spring and Fall Invites, while also claiming the Penn State Altoona Fall Invitational. Angela Bialas took home the Mount Aloysius Fall Invitational, while Liz Loftus took first in the Grove City Fall Invite.
During the 2017-18 season, freshman Sydney Ball finished in third place at the annual PAC Championships to claim First Team conference honors. Maddie Leya, Angela Bialas and Meg Birmingham all earned Second Team honors, while Sara Norton picked up Honorable Mention accolades. Ball was named PAC Player of the Week twice and was lauded with each of the six PAC Rookie of the Week honors during the season.
In 2019, Ball was named the PAC's Most Valuable Player, taking first place in the conference championships as a sophomore. Â
Dr. Cline won the 1979Â PIAA State Golf Championship, the same championship that Arnold Palmer won twice. Cline was awarded a four-year golf scholarship at the University of Virginia, where he earned All-ACC Academic honors from 1981-1984.
Dr. Cline was Club Champion and Senior Club Champion at Latrobe Country Club in 2013. He won the Palmer Match Play Tournament at Latrobe Country Club in 2003, 2005, 2006, and again in 2008 and holds the front-nine course record for members at Latrobe with a 6-under par 30.
