In a game that went down to the final minutes, the Bearcats captured the Championship Game of the Coaches vs Cancer Classic, defeating Lancaster Bible College by a score of 66-59.
The game was close in the early going, with the teams sharing the lead throughout the first 18 minutes. Down 21-19 with two minutes left,
Isaac Turner and
BJ McGill scored on consecutive trips down the court, with McGill's being a three-point play, opening the lead to 24-21. McGill then added a three with 20 seconds left in the half, giving the Bearcats a 27-21 lead at the break.
The lead grew as high as eight, 39-31, after an
Armani Fountain bucket, but the Crusaders got right back into the game by scoring the next six points. However, threes by
Ryan Nelson, Turner and
Dennis Bassich helped Saint Vincent build the lead to eleven, 50-39.
Still, Lancaster refused to quit, eventually cutting a 57-47 Bearcat lead to just three, 57-54 with 1:21 left on the clock. The Bearcats responded with strong free throw shooting in the closing seconds to pull away for the victory.
McGill and Turner each scored 16 points to lead the offense, while McGill added 12 assists.
Armani Fountain added 10 points and six rebounds, while Bassich had 9 points, while
Grant Latus added 8 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
For Lancaster, Kody Koser scored a game-high 27 points, including 15-for-15 from the free throw line.
Isaac Turner and
BJ McGill were named to the All-Tournament Team, with McGill named Tournament MVP.
The Bearcats are now 3-0 on the season, and will host LaRoche on Tuesday night in the Carey Center at 8PM.
