The Bridgewater College Eagles got off to a fast start and never looked back, cruising to a 57-0 win over the Saint Vincent Bearcats in the football season opener in Virginia.
SVC only possessed the ball in Eagle territory three times during the afternoon, once on a fumbled punt by the Eagles and once on a long kickoff return by Dwayne Brown.
SVC's lone scoring chance came at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but a 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked.
The hosts got on the board with a field goal with 9:35 left in the first quarter, then added a touchdown to make it 10-0 after fifteen minutes of play.
Bridgewater then scored three times in the second quarter, including a fumble return for a touchdown with 10 seconds left in the half, to take a 31-0 lead into the locker room.
Two touchdown passes and another fumble return for a TD highlighted the third quarter for the Eagles, as they increased the lead to 51-0 en route to the win.
Ryan Crawford led the Bearcats on the ground with 43 yards, while David Emmanuel rushed for 26, and newcomer Manuel Brown had 25 yards on 7 carries. Starting quarterback Andy Borgen was 8-of-13 for 63 yards, while Matt Deakins was 3-7 for 32 yards in the fourth quarter. Chace Ginyard had four catches for 38 yards.
The Bearcats totaled 181 yards of offense on the day, compared to 461 for Bridgewater. SVC led in time of possession, at 31:09.
Brown's 79 yard kickoff return to the 8-yard line in the fourth quarter was the Bearcats' biggest play of the day, but the team was unable to push the ball into the end zone.
Defensively, Nick Revis had 8 tackles while Dan Wirkowski added 7.
Saint Vincent (0-1) has a bye week next week, and will begin Presidents' Athletic Conference play on September 21 at Waynesburg.
