BOX SCORE WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 20) - The Saint Vincent women's tennis team capped a solid regular season with a 9-0 victory at Waynesburg University in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The victory pushed the Bearcats' record to 9-5 overall and 7-1 in the PAC, a mark that gives them a second place finish in the conference. Waynesburg dropped to 2-12 overall and 2-6 in the league.
The afternoon started with three hard fought doubles matches before the Bearcats ultimately claimed victory in each contest. The tandem of
Susie Ellis and
Jackii Hauser earned an 8-6 win at first doubles, while the freshman pairing of
Lucy Bujdos and
Autumn Miller used a 9-7 edge at the second doubles position. Juniors
Anita Onufer and
Maria Gismondi claimed an 8-6 victory at third doubles.
SVC then swept the six singles matches in straight sets. Ellis beat Rachel Klemash by scores of 6-0 and 6-4 at first singles. Hauser made quick work of her opponent at second singles, winning 6-1 and 6-0. Bujdos earned a 6-2 and 6-4 victory at third singles, while Miller claimed a 6-1 and 6-2 decision at the fourth spot.
Onufer won 6-1 and 6-3 at fifth singles over Amanda Hooker.
Breana Liberoni helped finish out the victory with a straight set victory, 6-2 and 6-2 at sixth singles.
After winning four of their last five matches, the Bearcats will look to carry that momentum into this weekend's PAC Championships. The two-day event opens Friday and will be hosted by the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa. Start time is slated for 8:30 a.m.
