Overtime goal gives Bearcats victory over Waynesburg


LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 21) - After trailing in the second half, the Saint Vincent women's soccer battled back for a 3-2 overtime victory over Waynesburg University in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

With the win, Saint Vincent improves to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the PAC. The Bearcats also improved to 5-1 at home for the season. Waynesburg falls to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the league.

Waynesburg gained a 1-0 lead after the first half in which shots were hard to come by for both teams.

The visiting Yellow Jackets scored another goal in the 56th minute, pushing their lead to 2-0.

With their backs against the wall, sophomore Lauren Czerwien scored her first goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the 67th minute. Tori Sawhney added the assist on the Czerwien goal. Shortly there after, Sawhney tallied her first score of the season, tying the game 2-2 in the 69th minute.

The score remained tied and the teams went to overtime. In the first overtime session, the Bearcats won the game on a goal by freshman Kennedy Ains. Senior Emily Johns recorded her team high eighth assist on the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Corinne Burk earned the victory in net for the Bearcats.

Saint Vincent held a 22-9 advantage in shots, including a 13-5 edge in shots on goal.

The Bearcats return to action when they travel to first place Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, Oct. 24.
