BOX SCOREGROVE CITY, Pa. (April 29) – The Saint Vincent baseball team scored 16 runs on 20 hits as they downed Grove City College 16-5 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at RJ Behringer Field in Grove City.
The Bearcats got on the board first with four runs in the top of the first inning.
Luke Fox and
Dylan Kugler walked and reached on an error to start off the game.
John Malone used a sacrifice bunt to advance Fox and Kugler both in to scoring position. GCC elected to walk
Eddie Kilkeary intentionally to load the bases.
SVC made the Wolverines pay for that strategy.
Ben Webb singled home Fox and then
Brennan Hoffer used a sacrifice fly to score Kugler, giving SVC a 2-0 lead.
Aaron Burger then doubled the Bearcats lead with a two-run single to score Kilkeary and Webb.
The host Wolverines used two runs in the bottom half of the frame to cut their deficit in half at 4-2.
In the third, Kilkeary led off the inning with a single and stole second base to set up another Bearcats' run. Burger picked up his third RBI of the day when he singled home Kilkeary, making it 5-2 SVC.
A pair of runs in the third and another in the fourth allowed the Wolverines to tie the game at 5-5.
Saint Vincent wasted little time in regaining the lead, as Hoffer laced a two-run single to bring Malone and Kilkeary home to make it 7-5 Saint Vincent.
The Bearcats padded their lead with five runs in the sixth inning. Kugler and Malone chipped in RBI singles to make it 9-5. Kilkeary then added an RBI single that plated two more runs and then Webb hit a sacrifice fly to make it 12-5.
Senior shortstop
Matt Loftis produced a two run single in the seventh. Kugler then hit a sacrifice fly before Kilkeary tallied another run scoring single to push the advantage to 16-5.
Neither team scored over the final two innings and SVC snapped its brief three game losing streak.
Burger and Kilkeary led the offense, both going 4 for 5 on the day. Burger and Hoffer knocked in three runs each, while Kilkeary scored four runs. Fox, Kugler, Malone and
Chris Winkler each recorded multi-hit efforts as well.
Freshman
Brian Shaffer recorded his first win of the season in relief, tossing four scoreless innings.
The Bearcats (17-18, 9-12) begin their final series of the season when they host Thiel College on Friday, May 1. First pitch of the single nine-inning contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
