BOX SCOREThe SVC women's tennis team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 5-4 victory over Grove City College on the road in Mercer County.
The Bearcats got off to a strong start, winning all three doubles matches. Â At the #1 position,
Susie Ellis and
Jackii Hauser were dominant, scoring an 8-1 victory. Â
Lucy Bujdos and
Autumn Miller, a pair of freshmen, battled their way to a 9-8 win, taking the tiebreaker 7-5, in the #2 doubles match. Â
Anita Onufer and
Maria Gismondi, playing in the #3 pairing, were 8-5 winners.
The Bearcats needed two wins in singles to secure the win, and Hauser came through with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the #2 singles match, while
Breana Liberoni clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #6. Â Ellis, playing #1 singles, lost a third set tiebreaker in the day's longest match. Â After winning the first set 6-0, she lost a second set tiebreaker, 7-6, sending the match to the third set finale, where she fell by a 10-7 margin.
With the victory, SVC is now 2-1 overall on the year, 1-0 in the PAC. Â
