DEFIANCE, Ohio (Sept. 6) - The Saint Vincent women's soccer team scored seven goals in the second half as they rolled to an 8-1 victory over Defiance College.
The eight goals were the most for the Bearcats since they scored the same total in a win over Chatham in 2013. Meanwhile, the seven goals in a half is the most since 2012.
The two teams played through a scoreless tie for the majority of the first half before Defiance struck first in the 38th minute. However, that goal seemed to wake up the Bearcats as SVC answered 38 seconds later on a goal by freshman
Natalie Luppold.
SVC and Defiance remained deadlocked at 1-1 as they entered halftime. The second half however belonged solely to the Bearcats. Luppold scored her second of the day just five minutes into the second half, giving the Bearcats their first lead of the season.
Sophomore
Maggie Nelson netted her first collegiate goal. Nelson's goal came off an assist from senior
Emily Johns, giving SVC a 3-1 edge. Sophomore
Alexandra Piampiano pushed the lead to 4-1, scoring off an assist from Nelson in the 61st minute of play.
Saint Vincent continued its scoring onslaught when freshman
Kennedy Ains scored a pair of goals, making it 6-1 in favor of the Green and Gold. Ains' goals were assisted by senior
Meghan Smith and Johns.
Luppold added to her breakout performance when the freshman added another goal to earn the hat trick. Luppold's third score came off an assist from Ains.
Smith closed out the scoring for SVC, registering a goal for the second straight day. Freshman
Leah Scott added the assist.
Freshman
Corinne Burk earned her first collegiate victory in net.
The Bearcats controlled play for the majority of the day, outshooting the Yellow Jackets by a 27-7 margin, which included a 14-3 disparity on net.
Saint Vincent jumps back into action with a road matchup against La Roche on Friday, Sept. 11. Start time is slated for 4 p.m.
