PHOTO GALLERYThe Washington & Jefferson Presidents defeated the Bearcat women's basketball team by a score of 76-58 in the Carey Center.
The visitors played well in the opening quarter taking a 21-9 lead while SVC struggled to make shots.  The lead ran as high as 16 early in the second quarter (30-14), but SVC started to close the gap near the midway point.  A drive to the hoop by
Susie Ellis followed by a
Hannah Carroll jumper made it 33-22, but the Presidents managed to run the lead back to 13 at the half, 37-24.
Saint Vincent battled back in the third quarter, as back to back scores by
Babette Sanmartin, followed by a Carroll three cut the gap to just five, 43-38.  A three by
Mara Benvenuti at the halfway point of the period made the score 45-41, but W&J ended the quarter with a 6-2 run, making it a 51-43 game after three.
Ellis hit a three to start the scoring in the fourth quarter and once again cut the margin to just five points, but it was as close as the Bearcats could get.  W&J went on a 13-3 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.
Ellis led the offense with 18 points, while Benvenuti added 14 and Sanmartin 10.  Benvenuti notched a double-double on the night, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.  For W&J, Rachel Bellhy tallied 21 points.
The Presidents are now 14-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while SVC falls to 6-9.  The Bearcats will round out the home portion of the regular season schedule this Saturday (February 13), hosting Grove City College at 4PM.
