LATROBE, Pa. (March 16) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-8 decision to visiting Frostburg State in the Bearcats' home opener at the SVC Turf.
Frostburg State scored the first three goals of the contest before eventually building a 5-1 advantage with 17:11 left in the first half. The first SVC goal was one by
Sarah Wallerstedt off a pass from
Hannah Carroll. The Bearcats countered back with back-to-back goals from
Maggie Nelson and Carroll, making the deficit 5-3 with 15:36 left in the first.
The visiting Bobcats then rattled off seven of the next nine goals to build a 12-5 halftime advantage. Sophomore
Katie Stallings and Carroll scored the final two SVC goals of the half, each off assists from Wallerstedt.
After a FSU goal to start the second half, SVC answered with another score from Stallings off a pass from Nelson, making it 13-6. Carroll added another goal, this score coming at the 18:17 mark, closing the gap to 14-7. Frostburg then would tally the next five goals as both teams emptied the benches. Nelson would score the contest's final goal with three seconds left, closing the score at 19-8.
Carroll led the way offensively, scoring a team-high three goals and adding an assist. Nelson collected three points, with two goals and an assist. Stallings scored two goals, while Wallerstedt had a goal and two assists.
Helena Shoplik also tallied an assist in the contest.
Frostburg out-shot SVC by a 24-10 margin, including 28 to 10 on goal. SVC committed 24 turnovers, while FSU had 13. Frostburg had 15 draw controls, compared to 13 for SVC.
Frostburg evened its record at 3-3 overall. Meanwhile, Saint Vincent drops to 0-6 overall. The Bearcats open Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play on Saturday, March 19, when they host Thomas More. The contest is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
