PHOTO GALLERY CLERMONT, Fla. (March 2) - The Saint Vincent softball team dropped a 2-0 decision to Rose-Hulman before bouncing back to beat Finlandia University 13-0 in five innings.
In the first game, the teams were scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when the Fightin Engineers plated an unearned run after SVC committed an error with two outs. Another error led to an insurance run for Rose-Hulman in the top of the seventh inning.
Rose-Hulman kept the Bearcats offense in check, as junior designated player
Samantha Emert accounted for the only two hits for the Bearcats. SVC had perhaps its best offensive opportunity to score in the bottom of the third but a base runner was thrown out at second base to end the threat.
Sophomore
Emily Duerr was the tough-luck loser in the circle, dropping her record to 1-2 for the season. The lefty pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
The Bearcats' bats woke up in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the first and then six more in the second. SVC added four more runs in the fourth to enforce the mercy rule.
Sophomore
Shelby Noel led the offense, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman
Nicole Adisey chipped in two hits and two runs scored.
Emert and Adisey combined for the five inning perfect game performance in the circle. The duo struck out three Finlandia hitters, retiring all 15 opposing batters.
Emert finished up a stellar week in the circle, going 3-0 with a 0.39 ERA. The junior allowed just one earned run on nine hits in 18 innings of work. She also struck out 20 and walked just three batters. Emert also put together a team-best .500 batting average on offense. Noel had team bests in runs (5), hits (7) and RBI (9).
Saint Vincent finished the trip with a 4-4 overall record. The Bearcats return to action on Tuesday, March 15 with a road trip to Juniata College. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m.
