LATROBE, Pa. (April 23) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team gained an early lead and never looked back in a 17-5 victory over Franklin College in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action.
The win helped SVC close the regular season at 6-2 in the ORLC and 7-9 overall. Franklin dropped to 3-4 in the league and 5-6 overall. The victory helped the Bearcats clinch a spot in the upcoming ORLC Tournament, which will be held April 29-30 with an opponent and site to be determined.
After Franklin was accessed an equipment penalty to start the game, SVC took advantage with two goals in the opening 1:02 of play. Sophomore
Katie Stallings scored off a pass from senior
Helena Shoplik to give SVC the first goal of the contest. Junior
Sarah Wallerstedt followed that up with a score off a pass from
Naomi Schwaiger, making it 2-0 SVC.
Franklin responded with its first goal of the game, making it 2-1. From there, SVC took control, scoring nine of the next 11 goals, giving the Bearcats an 11-3 edge at the break. Stallings, continued her strong play as of late, totaling three goals in the opening half. Sophomore
Maggie Nelson also tallied three over the first 30 minutes of play. Shoplik added two in the first half, while senior
Katie Uhring, junior
Hannah Carroll each added one goal to go along with the score from Wallerstedt.
SVC scored the first four goals of the second half, forcing the running clock for the majority of the final 30 minutes of play. Nelson scored three goals in the second half, while Shoplik added two more goals and Wallerstedt chipped in a score in the second half.
Nelson produced a game-high eight points (six goals, two assists), helping her move into second place on the all-time goals list with 128 in her career. Shoplik tallied five points (four goals, one assist) in her final home game. Stallings and Carroll each recorded three point efforts in the win.
Freshman goalie
Maria Franey made eight saves and picked up six groundballs in the win. Wallerstedt had five groundballs and five draw controls. Sophomore
Alex Piampiano had five groundballs and a caused turnover.
The win gave the SVC women's lacrosse program 98 in program history.
