Game Recap: Softball |

Noel sets record, SVC, Bethany split to finish regular season

Shelby Noel set a single-season record with 9 home runs as the Bearcats split a doubleheader with Bethany College to conclude the regular season in Latrobe.

Bethany won the first game, 8-6, before SVC came back to win game two by a 9-3 margin.  Noel hit two home runs in game two for her 8th and 9th blasts of the season, establishing a new school standard.

In game one, Saint Vincent took the early lead, scoring in the second inning when Kelly Flaherty doubled with two out, then came around to score after a pickoff attempt by the catcher ended up in center field.

Bethany responded quickly with a two-run home run by Deanna Mihalco in the third, making it 2-1.

However, the Bearcats tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff home run over the center field fence by Sarah Swettlen.

The Bison then regained the lead in the fourth, rallying for five runs on three hits, taking advantage of a pair of Saint Vincent errors that made the score 7-2.  Kayla Kelly's 3-run home run was the big hit of the inning for the Bison.

A solo home run by Ashley Narigon in the fifth made the score 8-2, but SVC came back in the bottom of the inning,  as Kelsey Hunter hit a 2-run shot that also scored Noel, who had doubled.

Down 8-4, The Bearcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th, as Noel singled, followed by an Emily Duerr single and a Samantha Emert single.  Flaherty singled home a pair of runs, but SVC was unable to add to its run total, falling by a score of 8-6 in the opener.

Duerr (11-5) took the loss in the circle, working into the fifth inning.  Cassidy Uscilowski threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

In game two, Swettlen led off the bottom of the first with her second home run of the day.  In the second, SVC doubled its lead when Flaherty led off with a single and later scored on a single by Swettlen.

The Bearcats tallied another run in the third when Noel doubled, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a ground out by Duerr.

After Bethany scored twice in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-2 game, SVC's Morgan Murphy led off the bottom of the inning with a double.  She then scored when Swettlen reached on an error.  Noel then followed with a 2-run home run to put the Bearcats in front 6-2.  It was her 8th home run of the season, tied for the best in program history.

Duerr, Hunter, Emert and Flaherty then hit consecutive singles, making it a 7-2 game.  Mackenzie Gostomski drew a bases loaded walk that scored Hunter, to give SVC an 8-2 lead after four innings.

Noel then set the record by adding another home run in the 5th to deep center field, putting SVC ahead by a 9-2 margin.

Emert went the distance in game two, giving up just one earned run, walking one and striking out nine.  She struck out the side in the 7th to end the game.

Both teams conclude the regular season at 12-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and advance to the conference tournament, which begins on Friday.  Saint Vincent will be the #3 seed, while Bethany will be #4.  Westminster (#1) hosts, while Thomas More holds the #2 seed and will be Saint Vincent's first round opponent.
