Bearcats post non-conference win over La Roche


LATROBE, Pa. (April 9) - Anthony Hogeback totaled 11 points to lead the Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team to a 16-10 victory over La Roche on a frigid afternoon at the SVC Turf.

Saint Vincent got off to a strong start, pulling out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. The Bearcats got first quarter scores from Brendon Masten, Jeremy Kennedy, Charlie Russo and Tim Oxenreiter. All four scores were assisted by Hogeback.

The Bearcats offense continued to excel in the second quarter, outscoring La Roche 5-1 in the quarter to take a 9-2 lead into halftime. Hogeback added three more assists in the quarter. Masten, Kennedy and Corbin Linville each tallied a goal, while Alex Mueser had two scores in the quarter.

La Roche made things interesting at times in the second half. In the third quarter, La Roche opened on a 5-2 run to bring the deficit to just four goals, at 11-7 with 56 seconds left. SVC got a goal from Hogeback to stop the run and take a 12-7 lead into the fourth.

In the fourth, SVC outscored La Roche 4-3 to preserve the victory. Hunter Sharp and Mueser each added a fourth quarter goal while Hogeback had a pair of scores in the final quarter.

Hogeback, Masten, Kennedy and Mueser all tallied three goals in the win. Charlie Russo picked up 10 groundballs, while Granville Wagner added eight pickups.

Saint Vincent held a sizeable advantage over La Roche in shots (53-18), including 31-14 on goal. SVC dominated face-offs, winning 23 of the 26 in the contest.

With the win the Bearcats pushed their overall record to 5-5. Meanwhile, La Roche dropped to 2-11 in 2016.

Saint Vincent returns to Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action with a home contest against rival Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday, April 13. Start time is slated for 4 p.m.
