The Saint Vincent College men's soccer team saw its comeback attempt fall just short, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Hilbert College Eagles in Hamburg, N.Y. this afternoon.
Hilbert got off to an early lead when Matthew Bart scored his second goal of the season just 31 seconds into the contest off a pass from Nicholas Clay. Just a few minutes later, Wade Bergum extended the Hawks' lead to 2-0 when he scored his second goal of 2016, assisted from Daniel Pulaski. Pulaski then went on to give Hilbert a 3-0 lead over the Bearcats in the 33
rd minute of play, scoring an unassisted goal from 40 yards out.
The Bearcats gained some momentum towards the end of the half though, whenever freshman
Nick Bianchi headed the ball into the net for Saint Vincent's first goal of the game. Bianchi scored at the 44-minute mark in the contest and was assisted by sophomore
Nick Gaudy.
For the remainder of the game, both teams were held in check until sophomore
Mark O'Grady found sophomore
Zach D'Amico in front of the net to set up the Bearcats' second goal of the contest, bringing the Bearcats within one at 3-2.
D'Amico's goal was scored in the 81
st minute however, so Saint Vincent had little time to make up for that single score and fell just short of completing the comeback.
For the most part, Saint Vincent controlled the game offensively, holding a 26-14 advantage in shots, as well as a 10-8 advantage on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper
Nick Bohn played all 90 minutes and stopped five of the eight shots put on goal in the loss.
Saint Vincent falls to 1-6 overall for the 2016 season and will look to bounce back when they travel to play Penn-State Altoona on Wednesday, September 21. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
