Saint Vincent, Carlow play to double overtime tie, 3-3

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 21) - The Saint Vincent women's soccer team put together its best offensive performance of the season in a 3-3 double overtime tie with Carlow University at the SVC Turf.

Less than a half minute into the contest, junior Alex Piampiano scored off a cross from freshman Bri Carlin, helping the Bearcats to a 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into the match.

Carlow answered with a score in the 4th minute to draw even and added another goal in the 17th minute to take a 2-1 lead over the Bearcats. However, the lead was short lived for Carlow, as junior Maggie Nelson scored her first of the season, off a pass from sophomore Calsey Holshue in the 18th minute for SVC.

The Celtics would add unassisted goal in the 22nd minute of play and was able to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.

After several scoring chances in the early stages of the second half, freshman defender Molly Drach tapped a loose ball into the net to tie the game in the 51st minute of action.

Both teams would hold the other scoreless for the remainder of the half to force overtime. In the first overtime, Carlow dominated control of the ball, out-shooting SVC 8-3 during the 10 minute period. Things flipped slightly in the second overtime, as SVC would out-shoot Carlow 3-1. Neither team could find the elusive overtime goal before the second overtime horn sounded.

Carlow held a 31-29 shot advantage in the match, with both teams recording 13 shots on goal. The visiting Celtics held a decisive edge in corner kicks, 12-4.

Junior goalkeeper Melissa McCarthy tallied 10 saves in the game, including six in the first half. Sophomore Natalie Luppold and Holshue each registered eight shots for Saint Vincent.

The Bearcats move to 1-3-2 for the season and will host Point Park on Friday, Sept. 23. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
