LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 23) -
Corinne Burk and
Melissa McCarthy combined to make 15 saves in net as the Saint Vincent women's soccer team earned a 1-1 double overtime against NAIA member Point Park.
After a back and forth first half of action, the Bearcats broke through offensively with a goal in the 43rd minute of play. Junior defender
Lauren Czerwien passed off a free kick opportunity to sophomore
Natalie Luppold who drilled the ball from around 30 yards out for her first her goal of the season. The Bearcats would carry that lead into halftime.Â
Point Park tied the contest in the 58th minute of the game, when Erin Gilmartin beat her defender and chipped the ball just inside the right post. Both teams would have several opportunities to break the tie but the contest headed to overtime.
Point Park held a slight 3-2 shot advantage in the first overtime but neither could notch the game-winning tally. Each team recorded one shot in the second overtime frame as the Bearcats tied in the second straight match. The Pioneers held a 24-20 edge in shots for the game.
Melissa McCarthy started in goal and played the first 64:10 of the match, allowing one goal and making seven saves. Sophomore
Corinne Burk relieved McCarthy, seeing her first action in net this season. The former All-PAC performer collected eight saves in just a little more than 45 minutes of work.
Alex Piampiano recorded a team-best five shots, while
Maggie Nelson and
Calsey Holshue each had four shots for SVC.
The Bearcats overall record now sits at 1-3-3. SVC will wrap up non-conference play when they host Juniata College on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Start time is slated for 4 p.m.Â
