The Bearcat women's tennis team lost a hard-fought match against Washington & Jefferson on the road by a final tally of 5-4.
Two singles matches went to a tie-breaking third set, with SVC needing a sweep, but the teams split the final two events, giving the host Presidents the win under the lights in Washington, PA.
W&J took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, as
Maria Gismondi and
Anita Onufer posted the lone SVC win, an 8-3 triumph in the #3 matchup.
In singles,
Susie Ellis and
Lucy Bujdos were straight set winners in the #1 and #2 singles spots. Â W&J earned wins at #3 and #4, holding a 4-3 lead. Â The #5 and #6 singles matches saw splits in the first two sets, sending each match to the tiebreaker.
Onufer, who won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second 6-4, earned a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker to score the point in the #5 singles match. Â However,
Claudia Clemens, who had won the first set 7-5 and dropped the second 6-4, lost the #6 singles tiebreaker 10-5.
Saint Vincent is now 1-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, 3-4 overall. Â W&J remains undefeated in conference play, now 3-0.
