Swimming teams open season with victories at Bethany




FULL RESULTS

The Saint Vincent men's and women's swim teams opened the 2017-2018 season at Bethany College with a pair of victories. The Bearcats men were victorious by a score of 204-27 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup, while the women won 212-39.

The men opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley relay by Sean Doyle, Marshall Grubb, Jacob Davis, and Danny Whirlow, clocking in at 1:48.80.
Benon Brewer had a dominating performance in the 1000 Free, winning the event with a time of 11:10.15. Jarod Palmer finished second with a time of 11:45.44.

In the 200 Free, Davis was the winner, clocking in at 1:50.33. Teammates Kevin Martin (1:57.78) and Adam Gordish (1:59.68) finished second and third. respectively.

Another sweep took place in the 100 Breaststroke, as Peter Becker came in first with a time of 1:06.30, Sean Doyle clocked in second with a time of 1:07.87 and Justin Newman in third touching the wall at 1:09.00.  Zach Baum put together a strong performance in the 200 Butterfly touching the wall at 2:08.50. Coming behind him was Andrew Rectenwald (2:12.28) in second.

Alex Bolen won the the 50 free touching the wall at 22.57, coming in behind him was Matt Tashima (22.83) and Grubb (23.97).  In the 100 Free, Tashima took top honors finishing at 51.09.  Grubb clocked in at 53.39 in second place and Brewer in third touching the wall at 53.98. Gordish was the winner of the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:13.00 behind him was Nick Pietrusinski (2:26.66) in second.

John Martin put together a strong performance in the 200 Breaststroke clocking in at 2:25.62. Becker (2:30.36) and Newman (2:39.40) came in second and third respectively.

Another sweep for the Bearcats in the 500 Free, Kevin Martin claimed the top spot with a time of 5:19.87, with teammates Palmer in second (5:36.50) and Kam Faychak in third (5:42.59).

In the 100 Butterfly, Baum took the top spot with a time of 53.28, with Bolen (58.28), and Whirlow (58.94) in second and third respectively. Davis took top honors in the 200 Individual Medley touching the wall at 2:02.04.

Wrapping the meet, the Bearcats took top honors in the 200 Free relay, the quartet of John Martin, Whirlow, Kevin Martin, and Pietrusinski clocked in at 1:35.32.

The women started off the season strong with a win in the 200 Medley relay. The quartet of Maddie Bartrug, Claire Kenna, Tyla Jackson, and Marion D'Aurora finished the race with a time of 1:56.42.
           
In the 1000 Free, the Bearcats took the top three spots, with Ciara Lewis took first touching the wall at 12:00.61. Jill Cline (12.14.84) finished second and Gianna Boburka (12:22.14) finished third. Lewis added in another victory in the 200 Backstroke finishing at 2:23.87.
           
Kenna won the 200 Free with a time of 2:08.67. Along with second place finishes in the event from Samantha Mears (2:11.38) and Gabby Bobak (2:13.89) . In the 100 Backstroke, Jackson took top honors with a time of 1:04.54.

The Bearcats had another sweep in the 100 Breaststroke, as Carly Grove finished first at 1:14.99, Hannah Barkey clocked in at second with a time of 1:20.19 and Nicki Smith in third touching the wall at 1:21.14.  D'Aurora took top honors in the 200 Butterfly clocking in at 2:13.99. Kelly Kramer (2:26.50) and Sarah Sheldon (2:29.29) finished in second and third respectively.

Mears took first in the 50 Free, touching the wall at 26.70, while the trio of Kenna (59.29), Casi Smith (1:02.91), and Bayle Shreve (1:03.43) took the top three spots respectively in the 100 Free.

In the 200 Breaststroke, Grove took top honors clocking in at 2:38.46. Bobak (2:48.43) and Judith Anne Purdy (2:57.84) finished in second and third.

Sweeping the women's 500, D' Aurora put together a time of 5:32.20, with teammates Kramer (5:49.76) in second and Boburka (6:04.62) in third.

Later in the meet, Sheldon won the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:05.04. Mears (1:07.92) and Casi Smith (1:11.73) finished in second and third respectively.

In the 200 Individual Medley Bartrug finished in first with a time of 2:18.30, with teammates Grove (2:33.85) in second and Shreve (2:35.80) in third.  Finishing the meet, the quartet of Jackson, Barkey, Bobak, and Carolyn Welka won the 200 Free relay with a time of 1:54.20.

Both Bearcat teams will be at home Saturday, October 28 for another Presidents' Athletic Conference match against Grove City at 1PM.
