Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Nelson leads SVC women past Thiel, 2-1

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 8) - Senior Maggie Nelson scored two second half goals to lift the Saint Vincent women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Thiel College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference contest.

The game was scoreless at halftime despite the Bearcats holding a 13-0 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play. The visiting Tomcats scored the first goal of the game on their first shot, using a score from Nicole Perekstra in the 47th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

Just a little more than 10 minutes later, Nelson had the answer for the Bearcats, tying the score at 1-1 in the 59th minute. The Jefferson, Md. native split through two defenders and finished past the Tomcats' goalkeeper for her third goal of the season.

The Bearcats continued their second half onslaught, finally taking a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute when Nelson scored off a pass from junior Natalie Luppold. From that point, SVC did not allow Thiel to fire a shot for the remainder of the game.

Saint Vincent held a decisive 35-4 advantage in shots, including a 17-3 edge in shots on goal. Nelson recorded 13 shots, while freshman Savanah Gerstnecker racked up 10 shots. Junior goalkeeper Corinne Burk earned the victory in net, stopping two shots in 90 minutes. Chimamaka Palmer kept Thiel in the game, tallying 15 saves for the Tomcats.

The win moves SVC to 1-2 in PAC play, while Thiel drops to 0-2 in league action.

Saint Vincent hosts Thomas More for another PAC matchup on Thursday, Oct. 12. Start time is slated for 4 p.m.
