Strong finish for Bearcats in Medaille Tournament

The Saint Vincent women's bowling team won 7 of its final 8 games to earn three match wins in the final day of the Medaille Tournament in Buffalo, New York.

SVC finished the day with three wins and two losses in Baker match play, ending the tournament with a record of 5-5, good for fourth place among six competing teams.

All matches were best-of-seven Baker team games on the second day, and SVC opened against Pitt-Bradford.  The teams traded victories in the first four matches, before SVC earned a 19-pin win in game five.  In game six, the Bearcats were 171-158 winners, lifting the team to a 4-2 series win.

Up next was Division II Daemen College, and SVC got off to a quick start, winning the opening game 168-152.  Rachael Heater struck in the 8th frame, followed by a strike from Samm Firestone in the 9th.  Dani Koehler struck twice in the 10th as SVC put the game out of reach.  The Bearcats then threw a 182 in the next game, but Daemen won the game with a 205, and went on to sweep the rest of the series for a 4-1 victory.

Tournament host Medaille was next, and the Mavericks defeated the Bearcats 197-154 in the opening game. However, the Bearcats came right back with a 168-161 win in the second, and posted their highest Baker game of the weekend in the third game.  Cassie Murcko, Shelby Noel, Heater and Firestone threw four straight strikes, and Koehler spared the 10th as SVC won the game 211-147.  The Bearcats were unable to keep the momentum going, dropping the next game.  Down 3-2, SVC needed a win in game six, but couldn't carry strikes late in the game, falling 149-144 and dropping the series, 4-2.

The fourth match of the day against Hilbert saw Saint Vincent get off to a rough start.  Hilbert won the opening two games, before SVC won the third, 180-170.  Hilbert captured the fourth game 179-145, and the Bearcats were down 3-1.  The match then turned completely around.  Four different Bearcats struck in game five, en route to a 178-116 win.  In game six, SVC earned a 155-127 victory to tie the match and send it to a seventh game.  Heater and Emily Duerr came up with clutch strikes as SVC won the game 159-148 and the match, 4-3.

Saint Vincent's final match of the day was against Division II Roberts Wesleyan College, as the Bearcats were trying to avenge a tough 3-pin loss in a five-game series a day earlier.  Roberts Wesleyan entered the match with a perfect 4-0 record on the day.  SVC was unable to throw a strike in game one, but the team made eight spares en route to a 162-155 win.  In game two, Firestone picked up a 3-10 split in the fourth frame, and Heater struck in the 8th to put the game out of reach, 161-138.  In game three, Murcko, Duerr and Heater all struck to start the game, and Firestone picked up another split in the 9th as SVC won 192-155.  After Roberts came back to win game four, the Bearcats were solid all-around in game five.  Despite getting only two strikes, the team's spare shooting was good, including another split pickup by Firestone, as SVC won the game 176-145 and the match, four games to one.

Dani Koehler was named to the All-Tournament team, leading the Bearcats with an 18.2 Baker frame average for the weekend. Heater and Firestone each averaged 16.8, while Murcko finished at 15.6, including a 16.1 score for the second day.

As a team, SVC averaged 157.7 for 54 games during the tournament, including 159.9 on day two.

Saint Vincent (7-6) will be back in action on Thursday night, November 9, as the team will host Pitt-Bradford in its first-ever home match.  Hillview Lanes will be the site, and play begins at 7PM.
