ALLIANCE, Ohio (Feb. 25) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team suffered a tough 7-6 loss on the road to Mount Union in the 2017 season opener.
Freshman
Ben Price scored the initial goal of the season for the Bearcats, giving the Bearcats a 1-0 advantage with 9:50 left in the first quarter. The Purple Raiders countered with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.
Mount Union added two second quarter goals to extend the halftime lead to 4-1 over Saint Vincent. The Purple Raiders added an early third quarter to push the advantage to four goals (5-1) at the 12:28 mark.
Jeremy Kennedy and
Hunter Sharp tallied back-to-back goals to bring SVC within 5-3 with 12:28 left in the third quarter. Mount Union countered back with two goals to extend its lead back to four (7-3).
Saint Vincent showed resiliency, as Kennedy and
Frank Casile tallied back-to-back scores to draw within a single goal at 7-5 late in the third.
Both offenses were quiet in the fourth quarter before Kennedy scored his third goal of the game, bringing SVC within one goal at 7-6 with 2:14 left.
Despite the loss, SVC outshot Mount Union 32-21 in the contest, including a 22-14 on goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Connor McMillen made seven saves in net during the loss.
The Bearcats return to action with their home opener against Marymount University on Saturday, March 4. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
