Defending National Champion Thomas More College ended the Bearcat women's basketball team's season in the Presidents' Athletic Conference championship game, held in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The final score was 66-53.
The Saints, ranked #2 in the nation in the latest coaches' poll, jumped to an early 9-0 lead before SVC Coach
Jimmy Petruska called a time out to settle down his team.
Senior
Susie Ellis then responded with a quick three-pointer. After Thomas More answered with a three of their own, Ellis connected on another trey, then drove inside and scored on a layup on the next Bearcat possession, making it a 12-8 game.
Down 16-8, the Bearcats got another spark from Ellis as she hit another three, making it a 16-11 game, with all 11 points coming from the hand of Ellis.
After a defensive stop,
Babette Sanmartin scored, followed by a
Kayla Slovenec jumper that cut the deficit to just one, 16-15. Later in the quarter, a pair of free throws for SVC once again made it a one-point game, 18-17, but it would prove to be the Bearcats' final points of the quarter, as the hosts led 22-17 after ten minutes.
The TMC run became 10 after six straight points to start the second quarter, before
Hannah Carroll hit a three to make the score 28-20 at the 6:39 mark.
Paige Montrose then drew a foul and hit a pair of free throws to cut the gap to six, but the Saints went on a 10-3 run to end the quarter, going to the break with the score 38-25.
The Bearcat defense shut down the Saint offense over the first five minutes of the third quarter, allowing just one field goal and a pair of free throws over the first five minutes. However, the SVC offense also struggled, thanks to the size of the Thomas More frontcourt, which gave them an advantage in battles for rebounds.
Jasmine Weems, who was kept off the scoreboard in the first two quarters, provided plenty of offense in the second half, starting with a trio of free throws inside of a two minute span that made it a nine-point game, 40-31. However, the Saints' Abby Owings, the conference Player of the Year, then got the Saint offense in gear. Owings hit back-to-back three pointers late in the quarter than increased the lead to 15, and the Bearcats were never able to recover.
Weems continued to play well down the stretch, eventually ending with a game-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough as the Saints won the conference championship and punched their ticket to the NCAA National Tournament.
Behind Weems on the scoreboard for SVC was Ellis, who had 13, followed by Carroll with 8. Weems had 7 rebounds, tied for the team best with
Katie Ryan. Weems added four assists, while Carroll had three steals.
For the Saints, Owings had 15 points, 13 of which were in the second half. Madison Temple was held well below her 15-point scoring average, tallying 9, but had a game high 12 rebounds. On the afternoon, Thomas More held a 51-33 advantage in rebounds.
The Bearcats finish the season with a record of 18-10, while Thomas More improved to 27-0.
