LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 2) -
Maggie Nelson scored a career-high nine goals but the Bearcats fell 20-16 to Transylvania University in an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference showdown.
The total was a single-game career high for Nelson, who also surpassed Hannah Doblick for the program's career goals record with 178 in the loss.
Transylvania got off to a strong start en route to the victory. The host Pioneers scored the first five goals of the match and eventually built a 11-3 advantage late in the first half. The Bearcats closed the first half with three straight goals, getting a score each from
Sarah Wallerstedt,
Katie Stallings and Nelson, making it 11-6 after 30 minutes of play.
The Pioneers would built the lead to double digits at 20-10 with 5:30 left to play. However, Saint Vincent battled back, scoring the final six goals of the match to close the scoring at 20-16. Nelson scored six of her nine goals in the second half.
Aside from Nelson's big day, Stallings added a hat trick with three goals. Wallerstedt and
Naomi Schwaiger each chipped in two goals in the setback. Wallerstedt also had a team-high five draw controls, while freshman
Rachel Belles led SVC with five ground balls.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Maria Franey suffered the loss in net, making 12 saves in 60 minutes of action.
TU held a 37-28 shot advantage over the Bearcats, while holding a 20-16 edge in draw controls.
The win was the seventh straight for Transylvania, who improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the ORLC. Saint Vincent drops to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Saint Vincent returns to action with a road contest at Hiram College in Ohio on Monday, April 10. Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
