Bearcats capture Senior Day victory against Hanover

LATROBE, Pa. (April 22) - Behind a strong first half, the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team earned an important 13-10 Senior Day win over Hanover College in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action.

After the visiting Panthers scored the first two goals of the contest, SVC countered with back with five unanswered goals over the next seven plus minutes. Junior midfielder Maggie Nelson started the run with an unassisted goal before assisting on a score from senior Sarah Wallerstedt to tie the game at 2-2 with 25:10 left in the first half. 

The run continue with back-to-back scores from Nelson and an unassisted goal by freshman Rachel Belles, making it 5-2 with 19:02 remaining in the first half. After Hanover stopped the run with a goal of its own, Wallerstedt recorded back-to-back goals to make it 7-3 in favor of the Green and Gold. 

The Panthers would add a goal to cut the deficit to 7-4 but the Bearcats would close out the first half strong, rattling off four straight goals over the final 3:37. Nelson would register two more goals, pushing her season total up to 57. Junior Katie Stallings and sophomore Naomi Schwaiger closed the first half scoring with a goal each in the final minute.

Hanover would outscore SVC by a 6-2 margin over the final 30 minutes but could not get any closer as the Bearcats earned the victory. Carroll scored both second half goals for the Bearcats, off of assists from Nelson. 

Nelson led the way offensively with five goals, four assists and five draw controls. Wallerstedt checked in with three goals, five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Wallerstedt moved into third place on the all-time points list with 194 for her career, surpassing Hannah Doblick. Carroll finished up with two goals and an assist on the afternoon.

Sophomore Hannah Graft caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls, while Emma Weaver recorded a team-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman defender Claire Kenna had a strong game, totaling three ground balls and three caused turnovers. 

Senior Anita Onufer picked up three ground balls, while senior Christa Jolin earned a start on Senior Day for the Bearcats. 

The win improves SVC to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in ORLC play. Meanwhile, Hanover drops to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in league contests. 

Saint Vincent hosts Thiel College in the home finale on Wednesday, April 26. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
