CINCINNATI, Ohio (April 29) -
Maggie Nelson tallied 13 points to help the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team to a 19-9 road victory over Mount St. Joseph in an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference game.
The victory helped Saint Vincent clinch a spot in the upcoming ORLC Tournament for a third straight season.
Saint Vincent used a fast start to gain early control of the contest. The Bearcats would score the initial two goals of the contest, getting a goal each from
Katie Stallings and Nelson.
After the Lions got on the board with a score at the 25:33 mark, SVC used a 5-0 run to take a 7-1 advantage with 10:30 left in the first half. Nelson scored three of the goals during the run, while seniors
Hannah Carroll and
Sarah Wallerstedt each tacked on a score.
Nelson and Wallerstedt would both score two goals, while Stallings would add another over the final 10 minutes of the half, giving SVC a 12-5 advantage after 30 minutes.
The host Lions would pull within five (12-7) with a pair of goals in the opening minute of the second half. SVC quickly countered with a 7-1 run over the next 22 minutes to enforce the running clock with 7:51 left.
Nelson would add two more goals, while
Kami Davis and
LingEr Williams also found the net during the scoring run for SVC.
The game was another historic one for Nelson, who broke her own single-season goal record during the contest. Nelson tallied 8 goals and 5 assists on the afternoon. The junior now has 74 goals for the season, breaking her previous high of 71 from a season ago.
Wallerstedt added a strong performance, scoring four goals and adding eight draw controls. Stallings would finish with three goals, while Carroll tallied two goals to bring her career total to 99. Senior defender
Emma Weaver caused a team-high three turnovers in the victory.
Saint Vincent improves to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in ORLC play. Meanwhile, MSJ falls to 5-9 overall and 5-4 in league competition.
The Bearcats face Franklin College (Ind.) to cap the regular season on Sunday, April 30. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
