The SVC women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a home loss to Marietta College, 3-1, on the Saint Vincent turf.
The first half was evenly played, with both defenses keeping the game scoreless through the first 38 minutes. Â The Pioneers got on the board with just over 6 minutes remaining in the first half, when Sophia Moise received a pass from Theresa LaGreca and shot high into the net for the 1-0 lead.
With just over a minute left in the half, SVC's
Kristin Marsh got past her defender, sent a cross into the box, and
Maggie Nelson headed it home to tie the game, 1-1 at the half.
However, in the 52nd minute, LaGreca again set up one of her teammates, as Kayla Tomlin scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal.  The Pioneers added an insurance goal later, as the ball took a bad bounce off a Bearcat defender, right to Chloe Williams who was all alone inside the box.  Williams scored to make it a 3-1 game.
Marietta outshot Saint Vincent 15-8 on the day, including a 9-2 margin in the second half.  Katie Conkle made five saves en route to the win.  None of Saint Vincent's three goalkeepers were available, so freshman defender
Savanah Gerstnecker was pressed into duty in the net, and made two saves while taking the loss. Â
The Bearcats will be back in action on Wednesday, September 6, hosting Mount Aloysius College in non-conference play.
