LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 13) - The Saint Vincent women's tennis team used strong singles play to down Washington & Jefferson 5-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at the SVC Courts. 

After dropping all three doubles contests, Saint Vincent faced an uphill climb to stay unbeaten. However, the Bearcats responded to the challenge, winning five of the six singles matches to secure the victory over the Presidents. 

Leading the way was junior Lucy Bujdos, who downed reigning PAC Player of the Week Rachel Johnson in first singles. Bujdos took the first set 6-2 before rallying to earn a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the second set. Sophomore Kate Palko also won in straight sets at fourth singles, by a score of 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2. 

The remaining three wins for Saint Vincent all came in third set tiebreakers. Junior Autumn Miller was victorious in the second singles contest. Miller took the first set 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-3. Miller then rolled by a 10-2 margin in the tiebreaker to take the match. 

Junior Lisa Marthens showed poise in her match at fifth singles. After falling 6-0 in the opening set, Marthens won 6-2 in the second set before claiming the match with a 10-2 decision in the tiebreaker. 

Junior Carson Snyder earned a 6-4 victory in the first set at sixth singles before falling 6-3 in the second. However, Snyder pulled out a close 10-8 victory in the third set tiebreaker. 

Sophomore Claudia Clemens dropped a tough decision at third singles in a third set tiebreaker. After both players split the first two sets by 6-1 scores, Clemens fell 11-9 in the tiebreaker. 

With the victory, Saint Vincent moves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in PAC play. Meanwhile, W&J drops to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the league. 

Saint Vincent returns to action when they host defending PAC champion Westminster College on Saturday, Sept. 16. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
