LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 5) - The Saint Vincent men's soccer team earned a hard fought 1-1 double overtime tie when they hosted Juniata College at the SVC Turf.
The game was a defensive battle at the outset of the contest until the Bearcats got on the board first with a goal in the 22nd minute of action.
Nick Bianchi launched a long pass into the box from the Bearcats end of the field, where
Nick Gaudy deflected it past the Juniata goalkeeper to put SVC up 1-0.
However, the visiting Eagles would quickly counter with a goal of their own in the 25th minute, tying the game at 1-1. The score remained that way heading into halftime. Juniata would outshoot SVC by a 9-1 margin in the second half but neither team could break the tie and the contest headed to overtime.
Saint Vincent regrouped and dominated the ball in the first overtime.
Ian Garay had two shot attempts during the 10 minute period, while Juniata was held without a shot during the first overtime session.
The game went to a second overtime, where Juniata would turn the tables and hold a 5-0 shot advantage. However, goalkeeper
James Antonoplos came up with a pair of saves in the second overtime to force a tie after 110 minutes of play.
Antonoplos was strong again in net, allowing just one goal and making nine saves in the contest. Garay led the offense with three shots, while Gaudy put two on net, including the score. Juniata held advantages in shots (23-8) and corner kicks (9-5).
Saint Vincent moves its overall record 1-1-1, while Juniata now sits at 0-1-2 in 2017.
The Bearcats travel to La Roche College for a match on Friday, Sept. 8. Match time is slated for 4 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
