GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 6) - The Saint Vincent women's soccer team played to a 3-3 double overtime tie at Thiel College in Presidents' Athletic Conference in Mercer County.
Thiel opened the scoring with a goal in the 4th minute of play by Nicole Pereksta. SVC responded quickly with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead over Thiel. In the seventh minute,
Natalie Luppold scored off a corner kick by
Leah Memmo to tie the contest. A few minutes later,
Corinne Burk collected a rebound and recorded her second goal of the season, making the score 2-1 in the 11th minute.
Saint Vincent held a 2-1 lead over Thiel heading into halftime. Early in the second half, the Tomcats got a goal from Lauren Hradesky, tying the score at 2-2 in the 49th minute. The score remained tied until Luppold tallied her second goal of the season and sixth goal of the season. The Luppold tally gave SVC a 3-2 edge in the 73rd minute. Thiel responded once again, tying the match on a goal by Emma Polinski in the 79th minute.
Neither team scored over the final 11 minutes and the contest went to overtime. Neither team found much traction in the first overtime, with the two teams combing for one shot. The Tomcats put a shot on goal in the second overtime but
Abigail Johnson made the save for SVC to preserve the tie.
As a team, Saint Vincent held a slight 19-18 advantage in shots and a 12-11 edge in shots on goal. The Bearcats held a 11-4 in corner kicks.
Luppold led the offense with a pair of goals, while Burk and Memmo also tallied points in the contest. Johnson registered eight saves over 110 minutes in goal.
The tie moves SVC to 4-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in PAC play. Thiel moves to 2-8-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.
Saint Vincent returns to action when they host Westminster College on Saturday, Oct. 13. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
