GROVE CITY, Pa. (Dec. 1) - The Saint Vincent women's basketball team scored an impressive 63-44 road victory over Grove City College in Presidents' Athletic Conference action in Mercer County.
Madison Kollar led all scorers with 20 points, while
Maria Morgan continued her hot-shooting from behind the three-point line, knocking down four treys in a 14-point effort.
Paige Montrose finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
Carlee Kilgus dished out a career-high eight assists while also adding three steals in the victory.
Kayla Slovenec was strong on the glass for a second straight contest, pulling down a game-high and career-high seven rebounds for SVC.
Jenna Lafko tossed in five rebounds, three assists and three steals to fill the stat sheet.
Playing in front of its home crowd at the College Arena, the Wolverines got off to a fast start, gaining early first quarter leads of 5-0 and 13-9. A layup by
Erin Giancola helped SVC close the deficit to two at 13-11 with 1:49 left in the quarter. However, the Wolverines used back-to-back buckets to build an 17-11 lead after the first.
Trailing by as many as eight points in the second quarter (23-15) with 6:41 to play in the frame, Saint Vincent made its move to surge into the lead. From that point, the Bearcats used a decisive 17-4 run to gain a 32-27 halftime advantage over the Wolverines. SVC connected on a trio of three-points during the run, including treys on back-to-back possessions by Morgan to take a 27-25 lead at the 3:06 mark.
Early in the third, a layup and free throw by Slovenec pushed the SVC edge into double figures, putting the score at 39-29 with 6:30 showing on the clock. A three-pointer by Kollar beat the third quarter buzzer to swell the Bearcat lead to its biggest of the contest to that point. The Kollar trey made the score 49-34 after three quarters of play. Slovenec closed out the scoring with a late three pointer in the fourth to make the final 63-44.
For a second straight PAC game, the Bearcat defense recorded an impressive performance, as they limited the host Wolverines to just 44 points on the afternoon. Grove City converted just 3-of-14 three-point attempts (21.4 percent) and committed 21 turnovers in the contest.
The win is the third straight for the Bearcats, who improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. Meanwhile, the Wolverines fall to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in PAC action.
Saint Vincent returns to the Carey Center to host Thiel College on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Start time against the Tomcats is set for 5:30 p.m.
